A University’s Flying Pigs by Jerry Mushin

“…plenty of moments to provoke a chuckle.” THE DEE TIMES

“…an engaging and thought-provoking look at academic bureaucracy, workplace politics, and the struggle to bring about institutional change.” BOOKAUSE REVIEWS

Robert Morgan, in his first year as a lecturer at a New Zealand university, finds that there is something disturbing about his senior colleagues. Some of them are unimpressive, but the key point is the limited accountability for their duplicity, which is compounded by their strenuous efforts to protect each other.

It is the mid-1980s, so there is no internet and no e-mail. There are no mobile telephones. Most communications, including between immediate colleagues, are put in pigeonholes. Political events, including the government’s “more‑market” policies, are difficult to ignore.

Every incident in this story is inspired by an incident that the author remembers, although names (and other details) have been changed to protect the guilty.
